In 1965, Rankin M. Smith, an Atlanta insurance executive, was granted the franchise by NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, and the Falcons were formed. When fans voted for the name of the team, several suggested the name "Falcons", but only one, Julia Elliott, a high school teacher from nearby Griffith, was the winner because she chose the name because "Falcons are proud and noble because of their bravery and good fighting." It never leaves its prey behind, which is one of the traditional virtues of sportsmanship." The Falcons won the National League Championship in 1998. The team is now owned by Arthur Blank and valued at $534 million.
